Welcome to the Literacy Page!
Reading:
Students are expected to have a book with them each day for silent reading time. Students are encouraged to chose books where they become captivated with the characters, scenes and story line. Once a book is complete they will document their books in their reading log.
We have now finished "The Breadwinner" by Deborah Ellis. A book about a heroic girl who takes on life's challenges in Kabul Afghanistan. We are now actively participating in reading the sequel "Parvanas Journey." These books have not only introduced our class to new vocabulary, but have also allowed for in-depth class conversations about what other people from around the world go through in their day to day lives. Please ask your child about this story. I am sure they will be happy to share what they have learned.
We have also been reading a variety of texts in class (articles, narratives, etc) where students are expected to comprehend what it is that they are reading. This is especially important as students are participating in inquire based projects and are learning to read, comprehend and pull the important information for research purposes.
Writing:
We have had the opportunity for writing everyday! We have been focussed on becoming comfortable and empowered with our own unique writing style through writing small descriptive paragraphs based on 'things that are awesome in our every day lives.' This month we will be focusing on descriptive writing through our "Awesome moments" based off of the "Book of Awesome" written by Neil Pasricha.
